Fish Farm House: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature

Junghee Lee's Award-Winning Design Embraces the Sea

In the quaint fishing village of Geoje, South Korea, a unique architectural marvel stands out - the Fish Farm House. Designed by Junghee Lee, this house is a testament to the harmonious blend of architecture and nature, with the sea as its main inspiration.

The Fish Farm House is not just a structure, but a home that greets the sea. The design is open to the sea, offering a shelter that keeps in tune with the natural surroundings. As a one-storied house, it uses the reed field at the rear and Mt. Dongmang in the distance as a backdrop. This design reflects the client's deep connection with the sea, which to them signifies home, living, and life.

What sets the Fish Farm House apart is its unique use of materials. Exposed concrete, a material rarely used in the fishing village, is combined with familiar materials such as stone and wood. This blend creates a sense of familiarity while maintaining a unique aesthetic. The realization of this design required meticulous attention to detail and collaboration with contractors to express each property of matter.

The house is built using pine-wood exposed concrete and limestone, with a building area of 265.93㎡ and a gross floor area of 242.35㎡. The design prioritizes the satisfaction of its users, focusing on a spatial composition that suits their lifestyle. The entrance is strategically placed between the living room and kitchen, creating a transition area. A large door pocket allows the living room to be used as a large room, and a family room in the middle of the corridor serves as a buffer space between the indoors and outdoors.

The project, which started in March 2015 and concluded in August 2016, faced several challenges. The initial construction, carried out by a local civil engineering contractor, was unsatisfactory as it ignored the flow of the landform and elevation differences. However, Junghee Lee saw potential in the relationship with nature and decided to take advantage of it.

The Fish Farm House has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, creativity, and innovation. The Fish Farm House, with its harmonious blend of architecture and nature, certainly fits the bill.
